As many people know, Labor Day is the kickoff for OU Sooner and OSU Cowboy football as well as the annual last lake trip of the year. This can be a fun and exciting end to summer for many Oklahomans. However, with this “fun” comes the added risk for DUI and traffic related fatalities.

According to Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma, said about 365,600 people are projected to travel on state roadways this year, an increase of 9.3 percent over last year this labor day weekend.

According to Newsok.com “last year, over the Labor Day weekend, nine people were killed on state roads and 301 were injured. Nine people died in 2008 over the Labor Day weekend.” According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol “four of the fatal wrecks last year, alcohol was involved. And five people killed last year were not wearing seat belts.”

The following video shows the devastating impact of drunk driving and alcohol related fatalities to the families of those killed by this needless and criminal act.

While we wish each and every Oklahoman an exciting and fun weekend, please refrain from drinking and driving lest you needlessly take the life of another.
