According to Remicade and other drugs such as Humira, Cimzia, and Enbrel are causing severe invasive fungal infections called histoplasmosis. On September 4, 2008 the FDA "announced that the manufacturers of Humira, Cimzia, Enbrel, and Remicade must strengthen the existing warnings, in the Warnings and Precaution sections of the drugs’ prescribing information and Medication Guides, on the risk of developing opportunistic fungal infections. Some patients with invasive fungal infections have died."FDA reported that based upon their review of material that they had available , 240 users of TNF-blockers were found to have contracted a fungal infection called histoplasmosis. Of the 240 cases identified, Remicade was found to be associated with 207 cases of histoplasmosis.

The FDA is now HYPERLINK ""Investigating Remicade, Enbrel, Humira and Cimzia Link to Cancers and has asked the makers of the TNF blockers approved for use in children (Remicade, Enbrel, and Humira) to provide information about all cases of cancer reported in children taking TNF blockers. Most suprising are the vague reports the manuafacturer and distributer of Remicade are getting out there to the public. Reports given are only providing 1% of the total cases in their label.

Remicade users are experiencing unusual weight loss, fatigue, fever, sores on the skin, bone sores, sores in the mouth or intestines and in some instances neurological complaints. These fungal infections can be fatal as soon as three weeks after symptoms are observed.

The FDA still believes that the potential benefits of the use of TNF blockers such as Remicade, outweigh the potential risks. But who wants to be in the category of the reported risk percentage?
