Fox News is reporting that a 7-day-old Florida baby has been fatally mauled by a pitbull as he lay sleeping next to his teenage mother.

According to the report

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office in New Port Richey says the seven-day-old the boy was attacked Wednesday and died shortly after.

Neighbors told the St. Petersburg Times the 16-year-old mother didn’t discover her son was dead until a neighbor knocked on the mother’s door and woke her around noon. They said mom answered the door, then turned around and saw what had happened to her newborn son.

Neighbors said the dog belongs to the baby’s father. It was taken away by county animal services.

In the past I have blogged about dog bites, dog bite law and expressed varying views on whether certain breeds are more dangerous than others. Along with these blogs, I have had certain animal advocates express outrage at comments alleging or questioning whether certain breeds are more dangerous than others. Today I will unequivocally state that the damage I have seen done to children and adults by dogs such as pit bulls, German Shepherds, Dobermans and other similarly situated dogs leads me to conclude that these dogs pose a greater threat to humans than other dogs. The amount of damage these dogs are capable of should create heightened awareness among their owners.

I’m frankly sickened that babies and children continue to be fatally harmed at the hands of these animals. Accordingly, parents take special precautions if your children are exposed to these or animals.
