The overwhelming majority of scientists have concluded that Paxil causes birth defects, particularly congenital heart defects when taken during pregnancy.

Paxil earned more than 11.7 billion dollars for its manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Used mostly by women of child bearing age, GSK never performed any study to determine whether or not Paxil could be harmful to a fetus if taken during pregnancy. Undeterred by this lack of knowledge GSK aggressively marketed Paxil to women and their OB/GYN doctors, even promoting its use during pregnancy.

Though GSK did its best to avoid the possibility of discovering that Paxil could be harmful, in 2005 a study done by scientists at Boston University reported disturbing results regarding Paxil. The Slone Epidemiology Center had been asked not to report results specific to Paxil, however at the request of the FDA, GSK turned over data showing that exposure to Paxil during pregnancy increased the risks of congenital birth defects. In particular, it was noted to triple the risks of certain heart defects

In November 2005, at the request of the FDA, GSK changed the pregnancy category for Paxil to Pregnancy Category D, which states in part "[t]here is positive evidence of human fetal risk". Paxil is the only antidepressant to carry a Pregnancy Category D warning. Since the label change further scientific studies have been published confirming that Paxil significantly increases the risks of congenital heart defects, tripling the risk of RVOTO defects such as pulmonary atresia and pulmonary stenosis,

Parents of children who were exposed to Paxil during pregnancy and who were born with a congenital heart defect should investigate their rights to file a claim against GlaxoSmithKline in order to protect their child’s right to be justly compensated.
